Irlen Syndrome

What is Irlen Syndrome?

Irlen syndrome is a hereditary perceptual processing disorder. While it’s not an optical problem, it disrupts the brain’s ability to process visual information. Those with the condition can have problems with distortions, especially relating to reading text on white paper or classroom whiteboards and in moving vehicles.

A person with Irlen syndrome may have unexplained symptoms such as:

  • Headaches
  • Fidgetiness
  • Poor concentration
  • Sore neck, stomach, and shoulders
  • A lack of writing style
  • and more…

It can also affect a person’s ability to:

  • Perform academically or in a work environment
  • Behave
  • Pay attention
  • Sit still
  • Concentrate

Fortunately, Adele from The Reading Room can help.

Adele has been a qualified Irlen Syndrome screener for more than 10 years and can:

  • Assess for Irlen syndrome
  • Advise on colour filters
  • Provide information on where to get filters in glasses
  • Establish the costs involved
